Ankle Fractures: Assessment, Treatment & Recovery

An ankle fracture is a break in one or more bones around the ankle. Treatment depends on fracture pattern, stability, skin condition and overall health.

What we assess and consider

Prompt examination and X-rays; reduction, immobilisation or surgery may be recommended depending on alignment and stability; follow-up checks monitor healing.

Common reasons for assessment

  • Pain, swelling or bruising after a twist or fall
  • Difficulty bearing weight
  • Visible deformity or an open wound after injury
Recovery and next steps: Avoid weight-bearing until assessed if a fracture is suspected. Open injuries, severe deformity, numbness or a cold/pale foot require emergency care. Treatment decisions are made after an individual clinical assessment; not every patient needs surgery.
