Spinal Fracture Management: Assessment, Treatment & Recovery

Spinal fractures can follow significant trauma or occur in weakened bone. Prompt evaluation is important to assess stability and possible nerve involvement.

What we assess and consider

Emergency assessment when trauma is involved; neurological examination and appropriate imaging; treatment may include bracing and monitoring or surgery depending on stability and associated injuries.

Common reasons for assessment

  • Back or neck pain after a fall or collision
  • Fractures associated with osteoporosis
  • Numbness, weakness or other neurological symptoms
Recovery and next steps: After significant trauma, avoid unnecessary movement and seek emergency care. Follow individual instructions on bracing, activity and rehabilitation. Treatment decisions are made after an individual clinical assessment; not every patient needs surgery.
