Calcaneal Fractures: Assessment, Treatment & Recovery

A calcaneal fracture is a break in the heel bone, often after a fall from height or significant impact. It can affect walking and the shape of the hindfoot.

What we assess and consider

Assessment of skin and circulation, X-rays and often CT; treatment may involve immobilisation or surgery depending on fracture displacement, soft tissues and patient factors.

Common reasons for assessment

  • Heel pain and swelling after impact
  • Bruising around the heel or sole
  • Difficulty or inability to bear weight
Recovery and next steps: Do not put weight through the injured heel until advised. The recovery plan may include a period of non-weight-bearing followed by gradual rehabilitation. Treatment decisions are made after an individual clinical assessment; not every patient needs surgery.
