Back Pain Management: Assessment, Treatment & Recovery

Back pain can arise from muscles, joints, discs or nerves. Assessment focuses on symptom pattern, function and warning signs to guide appropriate care.

What we assess and consider

History and examination; advice on staying safely active; tailored exercise or physiotherapy; medication or imaging considered when clinically appropriate; specialist referral for concerning symptoms.

Common reasons for assessment

  • Muscle or postural back pain
  • Pain spreading into the buttock or leg
  • Stiffness or difficulty with daily movement
Recovery and next steps: Seek urgent medical assessment for new bladder or bowel problems, saddle numbness, progressive leg weakness, fever with severe back pain or pain after major trauma. Treatment decisions are made after an individual clinical assessment; not every patient needs surgery.
